Peanut and Nut Products Awarenes
Classrooms are designated as "Peanut/Nut Alert" or "Peanut/Nut Aware" classrooms. Some of our students have severe, life-threatening allergies to peanut/nut products. We attempt to make our school environment as safe as possible for the children. In our "Peanut/Nut Aware" classrooms, no peanut/nut products are permitted.
If children eat peanut/nut products at home, they are encouraged to thoroughly wash their hands before returning to school. We encourage parents to avoid sending food which may contain peanuts nut products, and to read food labels before sending any food or treats to the school. Please do not send home-baked goods with your child, as it is difficult to determine if these products have traces of peanuts or peanut/nut oils. A list of safe "treats" has been sent home in newsletters. We appreciate your cooperation.
Parents have been provided with information on anaphylactic shock and ideas for peanut/nut substitutes. Staff are all aware of the students who carry medication, and emergency procedures are in place.
Note: From Dare Foods, please check out their website at www.darefoods.com for peanut-free product information.
Athlone School Nutrition Guidelines
Background
A committee was formed in May 2007 and the school's nutrition policy was developed. At the first meeting, the team brainstormed ideas for the development of basic school guidelines on nutrition and healthy living.
In October 2007, the principal met with the two student representatives and these students were to survey students in the school, with the question, “How can we, as a school, promote healthy eating?”
The committee met and drafted a policy, including a rationale. A second meeting was held at the end of October, where the student survey was considered and revisions made to the draft document.
The finalized Nutrition Policy was published and distributed to staff and to parents in November 2007. The implementation will be monitored throughout the year and feedback from staff and parents will be requested in January 2008.
