How to Register for Senior 2 Math Courses

Which course is best for my child?
Here is a brief outline of each of the Senior 2 Math Courses, followed by a description of where the course will take your child after graduation.
20S Pre-Calculus (20SP)
Topics include:
Ø Polynomials and Factoring
Ø Analytic Geometry
Ø Trigonometry
Ø Exponents and Radicals
Ø Geometry
Ø Rational Expressions and Equations
Ø Functions
Ø Statistics and Probability
Ø Variation and Sequence
This course is designed for those students who intend to pursue math at the post-secondary level.
Students enrolled in 20SP can expect:
ü Daily homework
ü Mental Math
ü A new topic introduced every class
ü Cumulative testing
ü To take responsibility for their own learning (i.e. asking for extra help when needed)
20S Applied (20SA)
Topics include:
Ø Spreadsheets
Ø Exploring Mathematics Using Technology
Ø Technical Communication
Ø Linear Models and Patterns
Ø 2D/3D Geometry
Ø Relations and Functions
Ø Coordinate Geometry
Ø Measurement Technology
Ø Trigonometry
Ø Data Management and Analysis
This course has similar topics to 20SP; however, the presentation is different. It has more of a technology base rather than theory.
Students enrolled in 20SA can expect:
ü Daily homework
ü Projects (group and individual)
ü Consistent use of a graphing calculator (strongly recommended that students purchase their own)
ü To be taught from a different approach – a graphical and technological one.
20S Consumer (20SC)
Topics include:
Ø Problem Analysis
Ø Analysis of Games and Numbers (problem solving)
Ø Wages and Salaries
Ø Spreadsheets
Ø Trigonometry
Ø Spatial Geometry
Ø Consumer Decisions
Ø Geometry Project
Ø Personal Banking
Ø Probability and Sampling
This course is intended for those students who do not plan on taking any further math courses at the post-secondary level.
Students enrolled in 20SC can expect:
ü Building a portfolio
ü Projects
Note:
Students may double credit in math throughout the three years. By taking both the Pre-Calculus and Applied streams, students can experience different topics as well as similar ones presented a different way.
