For the year of 2007/2008 we have chosen to be a Wolf.

Why have we chosen a wolf for our emblem this year?

More on this later as we learn the life and behaviours of a wolf.

Wolves live in a pack - just like our classroom.  They have a leader who ensures that the pack is safe and has plenty to eat.  The entire pack takes care of each other and all the babies.  They spend their live learning and working together.  If one of the wolves is wounded or behind, one or two of the other pack members will be given the responsibility to remain with the wounded one and try to help.
A wolf is very intelligent.  It has super smell and a great sense of sight.

Wolves also have specific body language.  They communicate with their tails, as well as, with how they hold their bodies.  They have been known to have several different kinds of howls.  Some are for calling to each other when they want the pack to gather.  At other times, they will howl to get everyone excited before a big hunt.  Too, if one is lonely, he will howl for attention.  This all sounds very similar to how humans behave.

In Canada, we have approximately 50 to 60 000 wolves.  The only place in the world that there are more is in the Soviet Union.  All of our wolves are grey wolves.  They can be all different colours from coal black, to off-white or creamy white.  The white fur has more air pockets in the hair shaft so it can stand the more colder temperatures of the north.
