They did the outline for the autobiography and worked on the rough copy. The good copy should be typed on the computer if possible and handed into me on Monday, September 10.

Monday, September 10, Day 5 - 8A LA/SS - They handed in their autobiographies. We fisnished looking at the positive message posters around the room. We discussed the characteristics of a good poster. They started working on the positive message poster. In social studies I handed out the textbooks and they did a scavenger hunt using the textbook. They should have 1-30 done for tomorrow.
8E LA/SS - They handed in their autobiographies. We did a pre-test on capital letters and corrected it. I reviewed what I expected in the positive message poster. They worked on the positive message poster. In social studies we went over page 1 of the scavenger hunt. Page 2 and 3 are due for tomorrow.
7D SS - We reviewed the political cartoon assignment we did on Friday. We went over the different elements of geography. I explained that they should cut out articles, cartoons, weather maps etc. from the paper that deal with geography for the collage they will make next week. Finally we looked at a few more political cartoons about mad cow disease and Hurrican Katrina and discussed them.
Tuesday, September 11, Day 6 - 8A LA/SS - They did a pretest on capitalization and we corrected it together. I handed out poetry notes and we went over the terms that they will need to know this year. They then read a poem "One Evening" and had questions to do on it. The questions are due for tomorrow. In social studies we corrected 1-30 on the Scavenger Hunt assignment. Then they worked on page 2 and 3. This is also due for tomorrow. Finally they worked on the positive message poster.
8E LA/SS - We went over page 2 and 3 of the Scavenger Hunt assignment in social studies. I went over poetry notes of the terms they will need to know this year. Then we read a poem "One Evening". The questions for this poem are due tomorrow. Finally they worked on their positive message poster.
7D SS - I handed out the textbooks that we will be using this year and they did a scavenger hunt assignment using the textbook. This way they will understand the set-up of the text and they will see the types of topics we will be covering this year.

Thursday, Sept. 13, Day 2 - 8A LA/SS - We started the novel Curse Of The Viking Grave. We read and discussed chapter one. We continued to review capitalization. I handed back their autobiographies and explained the rubric I will be using to mark the assignments. They did a common writing errors sheet. In social studies I corrected the assignment on using the index and glossary in the textbook. We also discussed timelines and centuries. The positive message posters are due tomorrow.

I handed back the positive message poster and we discussed the strengths and weaknesses of them. In social studies I handed back the "Getting to Know Your Book Quiz" and we went over it. There will be a re-test tomorrow for those who got less than 70%.

7D SS - We discussed problems facing our earth that were mentioned in the video we watched yesterday called "Spaceship Earth". We also discussed the solutions to those problems. We started working on the geography poster. The poster should include a slogan and pictures that depict the different topics that can be covered in geography such as weather, map skills, economics, environment, landforms etc.

They worked on an assignment about finding the writing errors in some sentences. This is due for tomorrow. We looked at the elements that make up a short story. Then we read the short story "The Island" and began discussing it. In social studies I explained the Heritage Fair and they worked on the mapping assignment. The map assignment is due for tomorrow.

We will finish discussing it tomorrow. In social studies we finished correcting 1-14 in "An Introduction To History" and we played a memory game and a communication game. Wednesday, Sept.26, Day 5 - 8A LA/SS - We read an article about Terry Fox. They answered some questions based on the article. They then have to use this information to do a brief report on Terry Fox. The good copy of this report is due on Monay, October 1. We also discussed the poem "To An Athlete Dying Young" and how it related to Terry Fox. In social studies they started working on the questions about archeology which are on the "Introduction to History" assignment. These questions 1-6 should be done for tomorrow.
8E LA/SS - We read the peom "To An Athlete Dying Young" an discussed the poem and how it related to Terry Fox. They then answered some questions based on the Terry Fox article we read yesterday. They have to write a report on Terry Fox and should use this information in their report. The good copy of the report is due on Monday, October 1. In social studies we discussed oral history and then played a communication game.
7D SS - They put together the jigsaw puzzle of the world. They have to colour it and label the continents and oceans for tomorrow.

They have an assignment to do on the video It is based on a novel by Farley Mowat, the same author who wrote Curse Of The Viking Grave. Both stories take place in the Canadian North so when the novel talks about the tundra they now will have a better feel for it after seeing it in the video.

We read a poem about childhood called "The Key To The Kingdom" and did some questions on it which will be due tomorrow. In social studies we discussed the 1-6 questions on archeology.

We also discussed the "Key to the Kingdom" questions that they did yesterday. In social studies they worked with a partner on an archeological site assignment. Remember there is a test Thursday on the basic spelling rules we have been reviewing.

There will be a poetry section on "The World IS A Beautiful Place" and "Key To The Kingdom". There will be a short story section on "Charles" and "All Summer In A Day". There is a grammar section on punctuation. There will be a section on Curse of the Viking Grave and a section on doing a character sketch. They worked on the creative assignment for "All Summer In A Day". They had to do one of the following: write a poem, write a descriptive paragraph, write an ending to the story or draw a picture of a creature on
Venus or what they thought Venus would look like. This assignment is due on Friday. In social studies we corrected Part D of "Society, Culture and Civilization". I handed out a review for the social studies test which they will write on Thursday. The test is based on the world map assignment, the Introduction to History assignment and the Society, Culture and Civilization assignment. They also did a vocabulary assignment on Early Man.

Many didn't have it done so they should make sure it is in on Monday. They also worked on a "Childhood Memories" writing assignment. The rough copy is due on Monday. The good copy should be typed up and handed in on Tuesday.

8E LA/SS - I handed back the LA tests on the Family Conlfict short stories and poems and we went over it. I handed back the "Pet Peeves" paragraph and we discussed them. They worked on the skits/speeches on "Family". They finished up the video questions on family conflicts. It is due on Monday. In social studies we reviewed for the "Early Peoples" test which will be on Monday. They finished the "Mesopotamian Map Work" which is also due for Monday.
7D SS - I colliected the "Polar Bear" assignment. If it wasn't handed in due to the Christmas Concert then it is due on Monday. They finished the World Map 1 major land forms which showed the the continents, and major islands, peninsulas, capes etc. We corrected it in class. There will be a test on this map on Tuesday.
Monday, December 10 - 8A LA/SS - They handed in the video questions on "Bend It Like Beckam". Some students did their speeches and skits on family conflicts. Those who did not do it today will do it tomorrow. We read and discussed the poem "Erosion" and talked about the problems of old age. The stories and poems in our next theme will focus on old age. In social studies they handed in the Mesopotamian Map Work. They wrote the test on "Early Peoples" and they worked on the Mesopotamia assignment.

Tuesday, December 11 - 8A LA/SS - We read a short story "From Mother With Love". The questions are due for tomorrow. I handed back the "Bend It Like Beckam" questions and we discussed them. In social studies I handed back the Mesopotamia Map assignment and we went over it. I also handed back the "Early Peoples" test and we went over it. I reminded them that the Heritage Fair rationale is due tomorrow.

Wednesday, December 12 - 8A LA/SS - One group did their skit about family. We went over some usage problems such as when to use accept and except etc. We read and discussed the short story "All Is Calm" which is about a teen and her relationship with her grandmother who has Altzeimers. They worked on the Mesopotamia assignment. The good copy should be typed up and handed into me on Monday.

7D SS - I handed back the map quiz on Landforms Map #1, and we went over it. I went over Landforms Map #2 which included important deserts, mountain ranges, river valleys, etc. They did a crossword puzzle on the continents and oceans which we corrected in class. We played a review game for Landforms Map # 2 because they will get a quiz on this map on Monday.
Thursday, December 13 - 8A LA/SS - We read and discussed the short story "Cranes Fly South" which was about a boy dealing with the death of his grandfather. We did a review sheet on usage such as when to use fewer/less or have/of . We read a Mesopotamian story about the origin of life and then they wrote the rough copy of a character sketch of the main character Marduk. The good copy is due on Monday. We also went over the archeological dig assignment and they started to work on the Mesopotamian Creative assignment.

Friday, December 14 - 8A LA/SS - I explained how to write a free verse poem. They wrote a free verse poem based on a picture and the theme "You can't conquer time." The good copy should be typed up and handed in to me on Tuesday. We discussed the beginning of civilizaiton in Mesopotamia and what caused it. They worked on the creative assignment for the Mesopotamia Origins story. Remember the Marduk character sketch good copy and the Mesopotamia questions good copy are both due on Monday.
8E LA/SS - The last group did their skit on "Family Conflicts". We reviewed usage problems such as when to use fewer or less or when to use have or of. We read the Mesopotamia Origins myth about how life started according to the Mesopotamians. They had to write a character sketch of Marduk who is the main character of this myth. The good copy of this character sketch is due on Monday. We went over the "Archeological Dig" assignment together. They worked on their Mesopotamia questions. The good copy of these questions is due on Tuesday. They started working on the Mesopotamian Origin creative assignment which will be due on Wednesday.
7D SS - We finished watching the video "Land of the Ice Bear". They have a paragraph to do on polar bears using information from the video. The good copy is due on Monday. They should also study landforms map #2 because there will be a test on this map on Tuesday.
Monday, December 17 - 8A LA/SS - We read and discussed two poems, "Death Snips Proud Men" and "The Reckoning". We did a review on usage problems. I told them about the LA test tomorrow which will be about usage problems, and the stories and poems on old age. They handed in the character sketch on "Marduk". They worked on the Mesopotamia Origins creative assignment. They handed in the Mesopotamia assignment and did a work sheet on solving codes and a timeline.
8E LA/SS - They handed in the Marduk paragraph. I went over how to write a free verse poem and they wrote a free verse poem on the theme of "you can't conquer time". The good copy of this poem is due for tomorrow. They also did a review sheet on usage problems which we wil correct tomorrow. They worked on the Mesopotamia Origins creative assignment. In social studies we discussed why civilization began in Mesopotamia. They did a code cracking assignment where they had to decipher a message written in Mesopotamian.
7D SS - They wrote the good copy of the paragraph on polar bears and handed it in. We reviewed for the test tomorrow on the important valleys, deserts, moutain ranges etc found on our earth.
Tuesday, December 18 - 8A LA/SS - They wrote the LA test. I handed back the timeline assignment and we went over it. We went over the "Cracking the Code" assignment. We read an Egyptian Creation myth and they had questions on it which we will go over tomorrow. Remember the Mesopotamian Creative assignment is due tomorrow.
8E LA/SS - We corrected the review sheet on usage problems such as lie and lay, can and may. We read and discussed two poems "Death Snips Proud Men" and "The Reckoning". I explained what was going to be on tomorrow's test in LA. We did a listening test on the short story "A Sound of Thunder". Remember the Mesopotamian Creative assignment is due tomorrow.
7D SS - They did the map quiz on deserts, river valleys, mountain ranges found in our world. They did an assignment which reviewed global landforms.
Wednesday, December 19 - 8A LA/SS - I read them the short story "Sound of Thunder" and they had a listening test on it. I went over the answers to the Egyptian myth. They have to write a biography of one of their grandparents. I explained the assignment. They should do the research over the Christmas Break. The biography will be due one week after they return to school after the holidays.
8E LA/SS - They wrote the LA test. They went to the theatre and saw a presentation on the Heritage Fair. In social studies they did a timeline assignment which is due tomorrow. They have to write a biography of one of their grandparents. I explained the assignment. They should do the research over the Christmas Break. Thursday, December 20 - 8A LA/SS - To conclude our theme on time we watched the video the "Time Machine" by H.G. Wells. There is an assignment on the video which they started working on today and will finish up tomorrow. Remember any overdue assignments should be handed in tomorrow so I can mark them over the holidays.

We are starting a unit in Language Arts on "The Future". We read a poem called "The Only Solution" and disucssed how technology has solved some problems but created others. In social studies I handed back the Mesopotamia Project and we went over it. They also did a map on Egypt which is due for tomorrow.

7D SS - I went over the water forms map. They worked on a crossword for bodies of water. It is due tomorrow. I handed out the Global Landforms and Waterforms test review. The test will be on Friday and will be based on the three world maps we did. Two of the maps had landforms and the third had important bodies of water. The other part of the test will be based on the notes we did on landforms and waterforms. They need to know the definitions of terms like continent, lake, river, isthmus, cape, mountain, desert, plain, bay, gulf etc.
