All students at Bruce Middle School are a valuable part of the classroom, and all teachers strive to provide an inclusive environment, offering meaningful adapted and modified programming, as required. There are times however when the individual goals of some students cannot be met in the regular classroom. In those cases, we offer a number of options to supplement classroom learning.
These special programs include:
Fitness Class - Special gym class to meet physio goals and target gross motor co-ordination
Swimming - At the YMCA once or twice weekly, depending on the goals of the child
Pull-out Math Class - One-to-one or small group math class, for students with individualized math programs
Resource Period - One-to-one or small group session while instructional class in in French
Social Skills Sessions - Small group sessions to teach and practice social skills
Life Skills Cooking and Shopping - Shopping for and preparing simple recipes, geared toward teaching independent living skills
Canteen - Helping in the canteen to prepare food orders and/or make change
Special Olympics - We participate in several "SOM In the School" activities each year, including cross country, bowling, swimming, snowshoeing and track and field
Music Class - Special music class, with focus on movement, music appreciation and exposure, rhythm and percussion
