Kindergarten
- connects sounds with letters in words (beginning and ending consonants as well as some middle sounds)
- recognizes periods
- begins to use proper spacing between words
- recognizes own name, upper and lower case letters, familiar logos
- checks for completeness of work; adds detail where appropriate
Grade 1
- uses sound-symbol relationships and visual memory to spell familiar words
- uses periods
- begins to explore the use of other punctuation (question marks, exclamation marks, comma)
- capitalizes the first letters of names, the beginnings of statements, and the pronoun “I”
- checks for completeness of work and adds details and enhancements
Grade 2
- spells familiar words using various strategies (phonics, structural analysis, and visual memory) and resources such as personal dictionaries, classroom charts, help from others
-uses periods and question marks as end punctuation
- consistently and independently uses uppercase letters for beginning of sentences, first letters of names, and the pronoun “I”
- checks for beginning, middle and end in writing sounds in words
- begins to edit for complete sentences
Grade 3
- knows and applies conventional spelling patterns using a variety of strategies and resources
- knows and uses some punctuation conventions including periods, exclamation marks, and question marks when editing
- applies basic capitalization rules (beginning of sentences, “I”, names of people, places and things)
- edits for complete sentences
- learning to follow routines for self and peer-editing
