Grade 1 Benchmarks





The student begins to acquire a way of thinking about writing and understands purposes for writing:

                * generates ideas from own experiences and observations
                * chooses topics independently
                * generates details related to the central topic
                * shares ideas in complete sentences
                * expresses ideas in logical order
                * begins to use a planner (pre-write) to organize their ideas
                * reads own writing and revises by adding details,  with guidance  


The student produces various types of writing for different audiences and purposes:

                * small moments
                * informational writing
                * journals
                * poetry
                * content areas responses


The student demonstrates an understanding of the following conventions:

                * writes using complete sentences (spaces, periods, capital letters)
                * begins to explore the use of other punctuation (question marks, exclamation marks, comma)  
                * spells many words conventionally or with readable phonetic spelling
                * uses appropriate grammar in their sentences
                * begins to edit for capitals and punctuation
                * prints letters legibly
