Introduction & Overview





A committee of Kindergarten to Grade 3 teachers worked together to review curriculum outcomes related to writing, connect these to writing instruction, and share writing samples to serve as year end grade-level exemplars.

This document represents their work and was developed to be a support document for the primary teachers of the St. James-Assiniboia School Division.



The purpose of this document is to:

                * show the characteristics of student writing for end of year learning outcomes

                * promote greater consistency in the assessment of student work from grade to grade
                   and across the Division

                * provide an approach to improving student writing by demonstrating the use of
                   success criteria for clearly defined tasks

                * show the connections between learning outcomes and the assessment of student
                   writing

                * promote the writing process as documented in Manitoba's English Language Arts
                   Curriculum
