Grade 3 Writing: Small Moments

Things I can do:

* I show a growing awareness that the episodes of my life make great material for writing.
* I use interesting words to create a picture in the reader’s mind.
* I sometimes use other people’s suggestions about my writing to make it better.
* I use capitals and periods most of the time.
* I spell most common words correctly and many other words correctly using a dictionary.

Next Steps:

* I need to work on revising my writing so all my sentences read smoothly.
* I need to write a stronger ending to express my feelings.

The Magic Easter Egg

One cold Easter day a boy names Jake was walking though a field and he saw an Easter egg. He thought it was an ordinary egg but it was not. It was magic. Then he picked it up and ran home. He said to his Mom  Look Mom, I found an Easter egg. His Mom said That’s very nice dear. Why don’t you put it in your room and come down and wash your dishes.  He said OK and went upstairs and put the egg on his bed and then he went back downstairs.  After he washed his dishes he went upstairs and got his Easter egg and went to sleep. The next morning the egg was gone, He went downstairs and said to hi mom Where is my Easter egg? His Mom said “I don’t know.”He looked in the old tree, he didn’t see it. He looked in the storm cellar, he didn’t see it.  He looked under the rocks but he could not find  the magic egg. He finally found out that it was magic last night because when he was feeling the egg he saw a button on it. He pressed it and turned invisible. So he went inside and asked his mom if she could phone 911 and tell the police to look for it because it was very special. She said OK and phoned 911 to tell them. But they didn’t know the robber was invisible and was spying on them. When the man was sleeping, Jake didn’t (a missing line) knocked out. And he turned visible again. Jake and his Mom phoned 911. The man was arrested and Jake got the magic egg back. He put it in a safe place and no one ever stole it again.


Things I can do:

* I write fiction with a clear beginning, middle and end.
* I develop plots that have a problem and solution.
* Before writing, I make sure I have a problem and solution in my story plan.
* I revise (make additions and deletions) to make my writing clearer to the reader.

Next Steps:

* I need to carefully edit my writing for spelling and punctuation.
* I need to learn to use quotation marks correctly.


Grade 3 Personal Narrative:  My Trip to St. Louis

When I went to St. Louis we saw 20 cardinals in there nest. Then we went for brunch at TGI Fridays. It was good. I had triple chocolate pancakes. My dad had scrambled eggs and my brother had French toast with syrup on it and my Mom had eggs and bacon. We said it was great! After that we went to a famous train place there and they turned it into a place with water and the Hard Rock Café and a big store. We went to the Hard Rock Café for lunch. It was GOOD!! Then at 6:30 we went to a St. Louis Blues game but they lost 4 to 0. The next day we went to the Budwiser Factory and my brother was not feeling good so my dad and my brother didn’t come. So just me and my Mom went. After that we we’re gonna go to the Arch but there 50 people in line so we did not go on the arch. We went down the Missouri River and I touched the water, It was dirty. Then we went up steep stairs – it took me 5 minutes. The next day we went to the science centre and saw part of the Titanic. It was cool! They gave us a card at the beginning and at the end. It showed if the person on the card died or lived. My guy lived so did my Dads guy but my mom and brothers people died.

* I know that my memories make good stories.
* My writing has an order.
* I try writing different types of sentences.
* I spell most words correctly by thinking about how a word looks, spelling rules, and word parts.
* I usually edit for periods and capitals.

Next Steps:

* I need to work on writing stronger endings.
* I need to write in a way that shows my feelings and adds energy to my writing.
