COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The Veterinary Hospital/Office Assistant program provides comprehensive training designed to prepare an individual for a career in the field of animal care especially companion animals. As a graduate, you could be the front office person promoting the hospital and assisting the veterinarian as he/she actively engages in the art and science of companion animal practice. With extensive computer, human relations and clinical lab training, you will be skilled in the medical and administrative aspects of the veterinary office and animal care environment. Graduates may find opportunities for employment for veterinary clinics, small animal hospitals, pet stores, humane societies, municipal shelters, and business offices as receptionists, clerks and secretaries.
Introduction to Medical Terminology (110 hours)
Learn veterinary medical language through the study of word elements and word structure in relation to animal body systems.
Veterinary Pharmacology (55 hours)
Familiarization with drugs, both generic and brand names, used in veterinary medicine and their use, side effects and dosage forms.
Common Ailments of Animals (150 hours)
Develop an understanding of the history, the predisposing factors, the clinical signs, the treatment and cost, and the prognosis of commonly seen conditions and/or diseases which affect dogs, cats, etc. The course is taught on a body system basis.
Veterinary Parasitology/Zoonosis (55 hours)
An introduction to the diseases that affect cats and dogs and the diseases which can be spread to humans. The emphasis is on preventative measures and recognition of the clinical signs of these diseases in humans and pets.
General Computer Skills (50 hours)
Basic computer skills will be taught including keyboarding (minimum of 25 wpm), Microsoft Office, Vantage, as well as general file management.
Human Resources (55 hours)
Students will learn the day-to-day operations of a veterinary office, its functions and systems.
Sales and Marketing /Accounting (55 hours)
Students will concentrate on basic sales and marketing techniques as well as basic accounting skills.
Practicum (180 hours)
The practicum provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and skills in the practice environment.
