Mid Years Reorg.jpg

The Middle Years Reorganization in St. James-Assiniboia School Division, confirmed at the School Board Meeting on December 8, 2015, came in response to increasing French Immersion numbers in our division. This reorganization aims to address capacity issues within our schools and provide the best possible programming for all of our students. The Middle Years Reorganization process begins September 2016 and will be completed by September 2018.

As we begin to make arrangements to accommodate this reorganization, both as a school division and as families residing in our community, this area of our website will be used for communicating pertinent information and our planning process.

Common Questions

Is this plan final?

The Middle Years Reorganization initially proposed by Senior Administration has been finalized by the School Board. We are now moving forward with this plan and strategizing ways to ensure this transition is successful at all our schools.

What's happening in September 2016?

Effective September 2016: There will no longer be any French Immersion programming offered at the Grade 6 level at Golden Gate Middle School. Grade 6 programming at Golden Gate Middle School will be offered in English only.
  •       All French Immersion students currently attending a French Immersion Elementary School in our Division will be offered French Programming for their Grade 6 year starting September 2016 at Ness Middle    School.
  •        For Early Years English students, Hedges Middle School will now be the designated English Track Middle School for the John Taylor catchment area.
  •       Students previously enrolled at Golden Gate Middle School, either in English or French track, will continue their academic programming at Golden Gate Middle School.
What will the phase-in process look like?

Why is this happening?

  •       Golden Gate Middle School is approaching capacity and Early Years French Immersion numbers are steadily rising. The building won't be able to house this increasing population in the very near future.
  •        The phase-in process was chosen to support and accommodate families who wished to have their child stay at their current school for the duration of their middle years.
Who will be the principals at Hedges, Ness and Golden Gate in 2016?

Jordana Buckwold, Principal at Ness Middle School
Dan Kalynchuck, Principal at Golden Gate Middle School
Tammy Baydock, Principal at Hedges Middle School

How will this affect course offerings?

All Grade 6 students entering Ness Middle School in September 2016 will receive their core subjects in French, with the possibility of options as well. Further information will be shared as details are finalized.

All Middle Schools have a variety of academic and option-based programming. Programs designated as options operate based on student enrolment and interest. Any additions to option programming requires sufficient student enrolment, interest and the required physical space.

Will school hours change?

There will be adjustments to school start times due to the M:iddle Years Reorganization. This is largely due to transportation arrangements.
