The St. James Scholarship Foundation
Founded in 1938, and incorporated by a special act of the provincial legislature in 1958, the St. James Scholarship Foundation has fulfilled a vital function, administering thousands of dollars of scholarships, bursaries and awards to deserving students in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division.
The history of the St. James Scholarship Foundation is a little like the history of St. James itself, a story of citizens getting together for the advancement of a worthwhile cause. It is true that the Foundation began with nothing, no funds, and no organization beyond the group of twelve dedicated members. Six months after the inception of the Foundation, in December 1938, the Foundation received its first contribution, $3.00 raised by ladies of the group at bridge parties.
The St. James Scholarship Foundation was formed for the purpose of giving encouragement to and awards for outstanding merit, scholarship and character development. Approximately $17,000 is disbursed every year in awards. School alumni groups as well as business organizations and citizens are important contributors.
In the last five years, due to declining interest rates on investments, the Scholarship Foundation has been earning less than $17,000 in interest income. Therefore, in order to provide the students awards, we have had to use up part of our principal sum. In some instances, long-standing student awards have been discontinued.
The Scholarship Foundation is actively seeking donations. It is the goal of the Scholarship Foundation board not only to maintain the scholarships at their existing monetary values, but also to increase the amounts of the awards since post-secondary education has increased greatly in the past few years.
